The duties are in the performance of law enforcement work to preserve the peace; the prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes occurring on Department of Veterans Affairs controlled property. Duties include, the arrest of violators; the control of traffic; the provision of assistance for citizens in emergency situations, including the protection of personnel, civil rights, and VA owned or controlled property. The VA police officer assures compliance with federal, state, county, and municipal laws and ordinances as they pertain to VA property and agency rules. Other duties include, but not limited to:
- Reduce opportunities for crime and misconduct; - Conduct aggressive protective patrols for the security of patients, staff, and property; - Assist those who cannot care for themselves due to health or condition; - Extend information, direction, and courtesy to visitors, employees, and patients; - Identify and report hazardous situations and correct immediate dangers; - Take life-saving actions in all emergency and disaster situations; - Identify criminal activity and, where appropriate, apprehend violators; - Cite or arrest violators of regulations and laws when necessary; - Collect and preserve evidence; - Conduct search of persons; - Coordinate with local and State law enforcement agencies (OIG, FBI, DEA, etc.); - Search, process and diagram crime scenes; - Check status of stolen property, criminal histories, and wanted persons through computer network. Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. Specialized
Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
Experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. Physical Requirements:
The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, long hours of standing, walking, driving and similar activities. Must respond to alarms, pursue suspects, participate in training activities, climb stairs and walk during assigned foot patrols in and around large building, and campus. Agility, dexterity and strength are needed to pursue, apprehend and detain suspects. On a regular and recurring basis the work requires strenuous exertion physically restraining disorderly individuals. Must be physically able to lift or carry injured or hurt persons, evacuate persons to safety during disasters or other emergencies. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
