Industrial Hygienist

Your responsibility is to direct all activities of the Research Service industrial hygiene and Biosafety program with the goal of preventing, eliminating, or reducing chemical, physical and biological risks to the well-being of Research Service staff members and Research Subjects. Your assigned work areas include biomedical research laboratories and clinical research areas. Your duties can include but are not limited to the following:
Conducting studies of work operations and processes, examining work environments, analyzing findings, promulgating recommendations Preparing various reports Investigate biosafety accidents including incidents resulting in exposure to biohazardous agents, illness, personal injury or property damage and develops in coordination with others, a plan to correct the situation, develop and implement emergency response planning for spills, accidents and incidents involving chemicals, biohazard agents and materials Manages the review of research grant applications, proposals and activities involving biohazardous materials and recombinant DNA Developing project specific standard operating procedures in relation to handling and proper disposal of chemicals and biohazards Receives and disposes of hazardous wastes and maintains appropriate records in accordance with existing EPA standards, state laws and VA regulations Identifies and requisitions test equipment used in performing industrial hygiene tasks. Performs or arranges for proper calibration and maintenance of equipment Performs other duties as assigned Work Schedule:

You must meet one of the following basic requirements below to be eligible for the GS-0690, Industrial Hygiene job series. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. NOTE:

MUST have successfully completed a bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. Note:
Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. Transcripts must be submitted with your application materials. OR MUST have successfully completed a bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. Note:
Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) as a professional engineering curriculum. Transcripts must be submitted with your application materials. OR MUST have a certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). Note:

Experience:
MUST possess at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equipped with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Industrial Hygienist position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS 9 grade level. Specialized experience includes:
possessing working experience as an industrial hygienist in a medical research environment; developing project specific standard operating procedures in relation to handling and proper disposal of chemicals and biohazards; possessing knowledge of industrial and hazardous operations such as clinical, research, nuclear medicine and radiological procedures, use and storage of hazardous drugs and materials, building construction/lab renovation, hazardous waste handling and disposal; identifying and requisitioning test equipment used in performing industrial hygiene tasks including performing or arranging for proper calibration and maintenance of equipment; possessing the ability to prepare technical written and oral detailed plans, survey reports, corrective action and follow-up reports. (This experience must be documented in your resume.) OR Education:
MUST have successfully completed two (2) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree OR a master's degree OR equivalent graduate degree directly related to the work of the Industrial Hygienist position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. (Transcripts Required) OR Combination of Education and
Experience:
MUST have equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, as described above, which may be used to meet total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the Industrial Hygienist position. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
