Experience may have been gained in such work as reviewing and passing upon applications for agricultural, commercial, bank or mortgage loans; servicing a loan portfolio of a bank or other loan association; performing financial analysis of commercial concerns for investment purposes; appraising real estate to determine property valuation; or similar work; and must demonstrate technical experience processing, servicing and approving mortgage loan applications. Master's or equivalent graduate degree or two full years (36 credit hours) of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in one of the following fields of study:
finance, business administration, economics, accounting, insurance, engineering, mathematics, banking and credit, law, real estate operations, statistics, or other fields related to the position such as agriculture, agricultural economics, farm, livestock or ranch management, or rural sociology. OR Applicants may combine education and experience to qualify:
To calculate, first identify the percentage of graduate education you have earned. Then identify the percentage specialized experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Note that only graduate education in excess of that required at the next lower grade level can be combined with experience. Examples:
You have completed 27 semester hours toward a master's degree (50%) and have six months of qualifying specialized experience (50%). Therefore, you would be qualified for grade GS-9. Or you have completed 27 hours of graduate level education toward a doctoral degree and have six months of creditable specialized experience. Therefore, you would not be qualified for grade GS-11 because only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify applicants for positions at grades GS-9 and GS-11. For GS-11, then, you would by way of this example meet only 50% of the qualifications necessary. Note:
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills, and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience you document, to include volunteer experience.
